After almost 11 hours of sleep, we wake up to our last hiking day. About 13 km and a lot of waterfalls ahead of us. The closer we are to civilization, the more people we meet, and we already don’t like it. After so many days, it surely is hard to get used to. For lunch we found a beautiful spot under a waterfall, with a rainbow above our heads and feeling like we are in a fairy tale. We leave it with a heavy heart and set out for the last few kilometers. What awaits us bellow the hill is the huge waterfall Skógafoss, around which crowds of tourists swarm like bees and even a wedding is taking place. And here our journey ends.
The boys enthusiastically throw themselves under the waterfall in only their underwear, which is a real attraction for the others, as they are all bundled up in winter jackets. A quick-witted tourist even managed to film them.
We move to a restaurant, for a burger, and beer and coffee and cake. We end the meal by realizing that “camping” here means a tent set up in the parking lot, and for a fee of 500 czk/person, so we head out into the bushes to find a better spot. Successfully. The journey is difficult, but the reward is a beautiful glade by the water with a view of the waterfall. We enjoy the beautiful sunset, the last dinner outside, and rejoice over the kilometers in our feet.
The next day, right after waking up, we set out to the sea to symbolically complete the crossing of the entire island. Vivien claimed that it is barely 5 km, but the sand is difficult to walk in with a heavy backpack, so it seems more like 15. In the end however, we reach our dream destination. We immortalized the moment with a few photos and a video, and made our way back to the road. From there, we hitchhike again to Reykjavík. Some successfully, some not. Whether by car or bus, eventually we all arrive in Reykjavík and are excited for a bed and a shower.
So. The fairy tail has come to an end. We conquered Iceland.
