Day 16 – No water no fun

We overslept again. Maybe because of the polar light watching at night, maybe because we’ve already been on the go for 16 days, who knows. In addition, I broke the borrowed solar panel during hasty packing. What a start to the day.

We have 1000m up to do and we have probably the hottest day that anyone has ever experienced in Iceland, so we are sweating like dogs. Our backpacks are heavier than the day before as we carry water for two days. Today’s campsite does not have a source of drinking water, and the price for 1 liter is around 100 czk, which is the price of a full shower everywhere else.

No water means no food, so we prefer the extra few kg. We are doing quite well, the mood is good.  Arys’s still walking in flip-flops, despite the rough terrain. Solidified lava, snow, loose sand, ice… even in hiking boots, it takes a toll on our feet. (Well, he also reported a stubbed little finger and one missing nail at the finish line.). We stop for lunch about 4 km before the finish.

The cottage is small but very friendly, they have beer and there is no charge for camping outside! Finally someone has common sense. There is only one toilet, which turned out to be rather impractical especially in the morning. We cook dinner inside, but my back hurts so badly that I just lie on the floor most of the time. I fall asleep so quickly that I didn’t even have time to take off my sweatshirt. (I made it to the tent tho, no worries)
