Day 8 – H2O

H2O, just find water.

A storm is coming. We start the day with a big briefing on what to do in the next days. The forecast has changed slightly from the day before and we know that we most likely won’t be able to get far enough in the next days to say for sure that the storm will pass us. However, due to the condition of one of our tents, we don’t dare to risk it, so we only plan to reach the nearest fixed building (which is 2 days’ journey away) and camp there for the necessary time. So our next goal is a stable, 48 km (supposedly) away. We have 2 days of 24 km each, which sounds quite reasonable, so we don’t worry too much about it.

Our idea collapses after realizing that there is no source of water at the 24th km, so we have to keep walking. Another promising looking river from the map is about 6-9 km away. Arys has been walking in flip-flops since the morning, and carries his shoes on his back, or sometimes on someone else’s back 😀 . We inadvertently extended our route through some very impassable sand while trying to get a nice drone shot, which drained us of almost all of our remaining energy. We devour one biscuit after another to make up for the loss a little.

When we finally reach the 30th km, we discover with horror that both rivers we were expecting in this area are dry and we continue once again, without water. We hope for a lake, another 5 km away.

However, we quickly find out that we would have to carry Arys on our backs, because he can hardly walk anymore, so we settle for a large puddle of water, which we luckily came across along the way. We simply run the water through a filter and boil it for dinner.

We eat dinner crammed into our newly repaired tent, which is not only uncomfortable, but also quite smelly. I really have no idea who thought of it. I better run quickly to my tent, good night 🙂
