Day 4 – Walking on the Moon

Today’s goal is the Laugafell hut. Actually not the hut itself, but rather the geothermal lake in its immediate vicinity. We are separated by 24 km, which for a change seems like a realistic goal.

In the morning, we have breakfast half-hidden in the tent, because the temperature is stuck somewhere around the freezing point. We try to pack everything as quickly as possible and leave, so that we can finally warm up a little.

Today, the hike is relatively easy for us, probably mainly thanks to the motivation that the idea of a hot bath provides. Unfortunately, there is still not much to look at, we are still surrounded by only sand and stones.

To be fair though, we have nothing to complain about, the weather is calm and we are walking on flat ground. A few cars passed by, and without exception each and every one stopped for their owners to make sure we were okay and didn’t need help. The nature of locals really is heartwarming.

Around the 15th km, Arys begins to get tired, so we slow down a bit to rest. Since it’s still relatively early and we don’t have much left to go, we don’t stop for a lunch. About 7 km before the finish line, another car passes by, coincidentally driven by the warden of the Laugafell hut. Not wanting to test his limits, Arys gets into the car and drives ahead. We continue on our way. The empty stomach is already protesting, and soon after, the exhausted muscles.

For the last 4 km, I scrape the strength from the deepest bottom, but in the end we all make it to the finish line. Arys has set up the tents, in the meantime, so we can sit down for lunch. We quickly wash our clothes and then we are on our way to the hot water. No one measured the time, but we got out only when hunger forced us.

We rounded off the evening with a warm dinner, and soon got ready for bed.

Before falling asleep, we still beg Vivien to move tomorrow’s alarm clock to at least 6:30. Everyone else agreed, so we treat ourselves to a lovely 8 hours of sleep.

Good night
